Figure skater Nancy Kerrigan is assaulted prior to the U.S. Skating Championships in Detroit.

A Stoneham resident and member of the Skating Club of Boston, Kerrigan is assaulted and injured after practicing at Cobo Arena, forcing her to drop out the U.S. singles championship, which is won by Tonya Harding. It is subsequently revealed that Kerrigan’s attacker was an associate of Harding, who is stripped of the title. Kerrigan goes onto win a silver medal in the Olympic games later in the year.
